Ugljan is on of the oldest inhabited islands, known as Lissa in pre-history. In Illyrian times it was extensively settled, the stone walls marking out the cultivated land. Walk from the house along an ancient trail to the early stone age remains in caves in Čeprljanda. Cycle along the old drove paths on the island, through deserted pine and olive groves. Visit the medieval fort on St. Michael's Mount. Go rock climbing on the high cliffs. See the ancient monasteries of St. Jerome nearby in Ugljan village and St Paul the hermit on an islet near Preko.

Today the island is a genetic reserve for diverse varieties of olive trees. For wider tourism it is easy to get to Zadar. A regular high speed passenger ferry takes you straight to the City Gates from nearby Preko. In addition there is an hourly car ferry from the end of the motorway in .Zadar to Preko that runs till midnight in the high season.
